Walter Willson Cobbett (1847 – 1937) was a philanthropist of great importance during the so-called English Musical Renaissance. Through his sponsorship of emerging composers of the day, he helped to forge a British school of chamber composition inspired by that of the first Renaissance, from Bridge to Turnage and beyond.
Alongside the ensemble’s exploration of Cobbetts’s work and legacy through the twentieth century, it has also inaugurated a new competition for composers inspired by Cobbett’s work. Following a series of public masterclasses, tonight’s concert presents the finalists’ pieces. Join us to find out who will win this year’s New Cobbett Prize – a £500 commission from the Berkeley Ensemble.
