The ensemble returns to Chute Lodge with more duets, this time for violin and viola. Mozart’s autumnal duo was one of two he wrote to help his colleague Michael Haydn fulfil a commission from Mozart’s nemesis, Archbishop Colloredo. Renowned in his day as a pre-eminent violinist as well as composer, Spohr’s Grand Duo stretches the form to its limits, whilst Halvorsen’s reworking of Handel has been a favourite of players since its composition in 1893.
