Welcome to the website of the Berkeley Ensemble, an exciting new chamber group formed by eight outstanding young musicians who met as members of London's orchestral academy, Southbank Sinfonia. United by a shared passion for chamber music, the group aims to explore a diverse range of repertoire for combined wind and string instruments specifically championing works by British composers. The Ensemble takes its name from prominent English composer, Sir Lennox Berkeley and his son, Michael Berkeley, with the kind permission of Sir Lennox’s widow, Lady Berkeley, and of Michael Berkeley.

The members of the Berkeley Ensemble are all freelance musicians based in London and have performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, English Chamber Orchestra, English Festival Orchestra, Ensemble Cymru, Manchester Camerata and the European Union Chamber Orchestra.

The Berkeley Ensemble regularly performs at venues across the United Kingdom. They have given recitals in St. George’s Hanover Square, Manchester and Sheffield Cathedrals, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at St. Paul’s Church, Honiton for the Honiton Music Festival. In June 2008 they gave the London premiere of John Casken’s Blue Medusa for bassoon and ensemble and pieces are currently being written for the ensemble by Swedish composer Karl Nicklas Gustavsson and young British composer Ross Clarke. Future engagements include a recital for the City Music Society at the Bishopsgate Institute and a tour of the South West of England with performances at the Exeter and North Devon Festivals.
