New Beethoven recording released

With celebrations already in full swing to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Beethoven this year, the Berkeley Ensemble joins the party with the release of our latest album, an all-Beethoven programme of his Op.11 Clarinet Trio and the famous Septet Op.20.

This was to be our first recording of core repertoire and to prepare, we spent a brilliant weekend in September 2018 with Richard Ireland from Chamber Studio at West Dean College honing our interpretation. Although we’ve lived with the Septet for ten years – it featured in our second ever concert, back in 2008 – with great music there’s always more to discover.

The recording sessions followed directly in Oxford. Although they had a great atmosphere, there was no way of knowing how they’d gone until we heard the first edits, more than a year later in November 2019. Thankfully, our instincts were correct and we’re really excited about the recording. A track has already been previewed on BBC Radio 3 and the disc was released on 31 January.
