St John’s Smith Square: Mozart, Plowman and Ferguson
Schubert’s octet for five strings and three winds established a durable ensemble that has inspired many modern composers, including Howard Ferguson and Lynne Plowman, in their own pieces for the same grouping.
Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio was perhaps the first piece for the mellifluous ensemble of clarinet, viola and piano, and has in turn has inspired many later pieces for the same.
