Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, composed in 1789, is widely recognised as a high point in the composer’s output and remains one of the most popular works in the chamber music repertoire. Its unprecedented instrumental combination was later explored by Brahms, whose influence can be strongly heard in John Ireland’s early Sextet of 1898, another work to break new ground in its instrumental grouping.
