Richmond Concert Society: Raftery/Panufnik/Beethoven
St Mary Magdalene, Richmond, TW9 1SN
The Berkeley Ensemble is delighted to return to Richmond Concert Society, opening the society’s 2021/22 season with an eclectic programme including the world premiere of Kevin Raftery’s Elegy Upon Elegy.
Quoted in the opening of Elegy Upon Elegy is Oliver Knussen’s Elegiac Arabesques, itself a memory of Andrzej Panufnik, whose Hommage à Chopin features here in an arrangement for flute and single strings. Framing this exploration of works in memorium, are Lennox Berkeley’s Piece for flute, clarinet and bassoon, and Beethoven’s seminal Septet, for which Raftery’s new work was composed as a companion piece.
