Trios for the unusual combination of clarinet, cello and piano. Beethoven’s early work was one of the first to make use of the combination; its finale is a set of variations on a popular contemporary opera aria. On hearing Brahms’ work, Eusebius Mandyczewski, a scholar and friend of the composer, wrote “it is as though the instruments were in love with each other”.
