We’re delighted to have been working in partnership with historian and broadcaster Dr Kate Kennedy, Senate House Library, and the Institute of Historical Research to develop ‘Songs of Suffrage’, a programme of music and readings featuring works by three leading English female composers whose music was central to the suffrage campaigns of the 1910s and 20s.
Works by Ethel Smyth, Rebecca Clarke and Dorothy Howell for strings and piano feature, including a movement from Howell’s String Quartet which we believe has not been performed since it’s premiere at the Wigmore Hall in 1919 owing to part of the printed score being lost following the first performance. We’re delighted to present this work which our viola player, Dan Shilladay, has been able to recreate from the score, kindly loaned to the IHR and Senate House Library by Dorothy’s niece and nephew, Merryn and Colm Howell.
